White worms on glass of aquarium! What the heck are they?
I just recently moved this aquarium. It has live rock and sand with one damsel and four fan worms. Today I noticed several white worms stuck to the sides of the glass. They are calcified and almost impossible to scrub off. I don’t know if they are parasites or fan worm fry. They are about a centimeter in length and do not move. If you have references they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
Will they hurt the fish?
They are a small species of feather duster worm, a relative of the fan worms. They would not be offspring from the fan worms and often arrive with live rock. In the right conditions they spread around a tank and are an interesting addition to the life in the aquarium. They never look quite as colorful as the many varieties you can buy, but they have the advantage of coming free with the live rock and being able to reproduce in captivity with little effort on the aquarist’s part.
Generally darker and without any “head” of feathers, sessile snails don’t quite fit my take of your description. These are very interesting though. Normally they attach to rock rather than Aquarium Glass. When very small they are like regular snails, but then they attach permanently and begin unwinding their shell growing straight from the substrate.
