Algae Control

Using Natural Ingredients for Algae Control and Pond Weed Control

Maintaining a pond for either personal or commercial use typically involves some type of algae control measures as well as pond weed control. A typical practice is to use some type of chemical treatment in order to suppress or remove the algae completely from the water. However, many of these chemicals have some type of copper which can be a potential problem.

Although copper can be quite effective in the fight against algae control, it has the counter effect on certain types of bacteria that are actually a help to the pond’s ecosystem. Reducing or eliminating the bacteria actually leads to a bigger problem of pond weed control.

Within a small body of water various types of bacteria naturally exist as a way to keep the water clean. Leaves, grass and other types of vegetation that fall into the water can accumulate at the bottom of the water. Chemical treatments for algae and weed growth produce massive amounts of accumulated decaying vegetation at the bottom. Bacteria then break these items down into materials that can be used either by the fish or small creatures inhabiting the pond. An overabundance of copper will decrease the amount of natural bacteria. Without the bacteria more algae will begin to develop from fish waste, decaying plants and decaying creatures. Many times this leads to a cycle of many chemical treatments during one growing season.

Rather than using artificial chemicals many pond managers have begun to look at more natural remedies to keep their water clean and their ecosystems healthy. Most of the time this means a two pronged approach towards pond weed control and algae control.

The first step involves getting more oxygen into the water through aeration. A pump that sits on the land supplies air through a tube that descends into the water and passes through a diffuser located at the pond’s bottom. This system increases the amount of dissolved oxygen into the water particularly at the bottom. Bacteria thrive on oxygen and the aeration will help any existing bacteria to become more effective.

It is quite common to find a pond with either low levels of beneficial bacteria or no bacteria at all at the bottom. In order to properly influence the pond weed control and algae control efforts the second step is to introduce some of the right kinds of bacteria into the pond. A dry powder that can easily flow through the water is a great way to introduce the bacteria into the pond. When used properly, the bacteria will reduce nutrients and carbon dioxide that are necessary for the algae’s survival. By reducing their food source the algae will be greatly reduced or eliminated.

Although it may seem like a cost cutting measure to only employ one method for pond weed control, in the long run it is more effective and less costly to follow this two stage approach. The increased oxygen flow helps not just the bacteria but also the fish and natural vegetation needed for the smaller creatures. And the increase of beneficial bacteria helps to keep a good balance in the pond’s overall environment. By promoting the overall health of the pond, fish will thrive and grow faster and future costs for replenishing fish or vegetation control will be eliminated.
