Will an old activated carbon helps with cycling?
So I’m cycling this 10 gallon setup and I’m just wondering if an old activated carbon from an established tank helps with the cycling process?Like if I let the old activated carbon sink to the 10 Gallon Tank and leave it there. I know I could just swish the sponge to the new tank but I just wanna know if an old activated carbon carry enough beneficial bacteria to help with the cycling.
Good quality activated filter carbon will remove nasty chemical toxins, odors and color (like the tea color from tree roots, logs or bits of wood ) from your Aquarium Water until the carbon becomes clogged or saturated then it’s useless. It is very important that any activated filter carbon in your Filtration System be replaced often, this will depend on the water volume of tank and the amount of activated carbon used, but a general guide is it should be removed and thrown away after 4-6 weeks.
Activated carbon will only work if you have water flowing through it, the rate of flow should be no less than twice the Tank Water volume per hour, if it is less than twice per hour then it will not be working at it’s best.
Having said the above, using an old bag of used activated carbon would be dangerous to a new tank rather than any good. Depending on how long it has been used for it will hold/retain all the bad stuff you don’t want released into your tank.
It would be better for your tank to get a sponge or filter wool from a working filter with all the dirt still on it, either squeeze the gunk into your water and let your filter suck it all up or place the used sponge or wool in your filter.
If you squeeze them into your water it will look like you poured a cup of coffee into your tank but this is the good stuff you need.
You still need to perform water tests as you would cycling a new tank to help you know what stage the cycle is at.
