Why did my Koi Fish die?
We have a pond in our backyard with two fish, a koi and Gold Fish. I seen both fish yesterday. Today when I was cleaning out the pond i noticed that the koi fish was flipped over, but wasn’t floating on the top, but is dead. This pond is about a metre or two deep.
It sounds like your pond is big enough, but do you know how many gallons it is? What temperature is the water right now? Do you have a source of aeration? How large is your koi?
Normally I’d say not to keep goldfish and koi together because the goldfish tends to get bullied, but obviously that’s not the problem here. The most common causes are lack of aeration, poor water quality (nitrite and ammonia poisoning), not enough space, or high water temperature. The only koi I’ve lost in about 8 years happened on a very hot day when obviously the water temperature got too high, and I lost one.
If none of those are the answer, it’s time to start looking at common diseases like ich. That seems to be fairly common in ponds and often by the time you realize there’s a problem, it’s difficult to treat.
