Coral Aquarium

Selecting Coral for Your Aquarium

Selecting the right coral for your reef aquarium can appear to be a quite daunting task at first. A lot of people do not fully understand the complete time commitment and the effort that is required for going into a reef aquarium. Years ago, it was impossible to tell exactly what the requirements were for keeping coral in the home aquarium and as a result many corals did not live very long in captivity. In this article I will be going over the various things to take into consideration when you are thinking about buying corals for your aquarium.

The first thing you want to establish is the type of coral to place in your aquarium. For beginners I would recommend you start out with some of the more sturdy species of coral. Try to pick the corals that have low maintenance requirements. Many species of coral can have very specific needs when it comes to lighting and water movement. So it is best to pick out coral species that will go with the flow of your planned aquarium. Some fish feed on corals, so check the details of the fish you are going to be putting in the aquarium to make sure that they are reef safe.

After you settle on your start coral you an start to decide on the products you will need to have on hand to care properly for the corals. It is generally recommended you keep your reef aquarium around 78 degrees Fahrenheit for the beset results. Corals need to be fed just as much as fish do, just check how often to feed them from plenty of guides online to know exactly how often to feed your corals. Another helpful trick for maintaining the delicate ecosystem is to try and purchase corals that are from around the same geographical location.

Corals will naturally fight for territory in the aquarium. Coral territory fights can pose dangers to the fish in your aquarium as some corals will release toxins to discourage neighboring species from moving into their space. It is best to know exactly what your corals are going to be capable of before you start to try and place them into the aquarium where they can pose threats to the fish and other corals. You should put a lot of thought into the placement of the corals in the aquarium, putting competitive species next to each other will equal out the balance of the aquarium.

I hope you have found some of these tips useful while you are considering placing corals in your aquarium. The main thing I can tell you is to research thoroughly before you start adding species of corals to the aquarium. When purchasing your corals, make sure you ask your salesperson any questions you do have. Also, there are plenty of helpful guides around the internet to check if you ever get stuck on what species will be best for you. Adding corals to your aquarium can be a big responsibility, but once you get the hang of it, it can be a very rewarding experience.
