Substrate for tropical aquarium?
Im setting up my first Tropical Fish tank, the ‘substrate’ that the aquarium shop sell are extautionate prices, Im wondering if I can use an alternative (like childrens sand – which do not contain anything as has to be safe for children) Providing the substrate chosen Is cleaned througly? If not why not, whats the difference between ‘ aquarium stones’ and normal stones from the garden center?
Its amazing on how different this answers can be to the same question. The last person who asked this question got a bunch of no answers.
When it comes to sand you want sand that does not have a uniformed size. So play sand is really not a good idea because over time it will compacted to form a hard crust. This prohibits water from being able to circulate under the sand and will make the bio-filter useless. This is why Agronite or coral sand is a perferred substrate. However it will cause your tank to have a high PH. As for gravel the smaller the better because it allows for more bacteria to grow. However you can use large gravel as well. Just allow for a deeper gravel bed. I have seen tanks with 1″ rocks as a substrate and they where healthy and attractive tanks.
