Pump Syphon

How can I safely drain the 6-8 gallons of gas in my S-10 so that I can drop the tank to replace gas lines?
Failed inspection so can’t drive it empty. Could idle it dry but would take days. Can’t syphon from filler tube for the screens in the way. Could I cut line (safely?) down stream of filter and pump it empty via the tank’s internal fuel pump? What are the tricks to doing this right, if doable at all? The devil is in the details. Would rather not blow myself up or burn my shop (and house) down. Thoughts? Also, Original equipment pre-formed replacement lines are extremely costly relative to aftermarket straight stock. Can a good and safe job be done with aftermarket unformed stuff? I have the forming tools from the brake line job that I did so I know I can shape the tubing. Have done rotors, calipers, shocks, ball joints and tie rod ends but this job looks like the worst of the lot. I guess I’m looking for a little more detail than is in my aftermarket repair manual.. Why not just siphon out the fuel into an approved container with an inexpensive hand pump?
