Aqua Clear
Aqua Clear Power Filter 30 help.?

I bought an Aqua Clear Power Filter yesterday. I like it so far except for one thing. When i turn the flow up on maximum it looks like the filter is releasing white flakes(bio-max)into the tank. I was just wondering if this is normal for the first couple of days and if the flakes will hurt my fish as some of them are eating the flakes(i have african cichlids, a jack dempsey and a plecostomus.) But when i turn the flow down on the minimum there are no flakes. I have emailed Hagen(the manufacturer)and all they do is beat around the bush. Can someone help. I did get them to tell me that you can only use 3 medias at a time, so right now I have the foam, the carbon, and the bio-max(what came with it)i bought the ammonia remover media but have not used it. I also have a whisper 30 power filter on the same tank. please help!!!
And yes I did rinse it, very well!!

Did you rinse the filter well first? This is most likely plastics and other debris collected during manufacturing. Yeah, it could harm your fish if they eat it. I would suggest taking out your filter and rinsing it well and/or run it at high speed in another tank/bucket and blow the rest of the junk out. Are you sure it’s the biomax? Run the filter with and without the biomax in this other container, see what happens to confirm its the biomax. Rinse that really well too if it is or take it back. It shouldn’t disintegrate.

It sounds like you haven’t cycled your tank. How big is it? You have big fish and an uncycled tank so you’re in for some trouble. Do you have test kits? If not, you are going to need to get some, liquid drops, for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates and test every day and be prepared to do 20-30% water changes 2-3 times a week to every day, depending on your readings until your tank cycles, which will take a beginner about 6-9 weeks. Do not use the “ammonia remover.” These types of products do not actually remove the ammonia from the tank. All it does is binds the ammonia in an agent that lessens its readability on tests and all that happens is you get lulled into a false sense of security because of false readings. It’s still in the tank and still deadly and still needs to cycle.

EDIT: Okay, it’s good you rinsed it. Test it in another container with and without the biomax just to definitely confirm it’s the biomax. That shouldn’t ‘disintegrate. I would talk to someone at a very reputable local fish store vs. someone at the company. Those big companies are never very good at customer service.
